Have you ever had a person truly believe in you and make a difference in your life? Maybe they cheered you on during a season of depression or hardship. Maybe they inspired you to go after a dream when you felt like you just didn’t have it in you or didn’t believe in yourself. Maybe they invested time, energy or finances to help get your dream off of the ground. Maybe it was even a simple conversation over coffee or dinner that planted an idea in your heart and made you get excited for what you could do in the world! Many of us have had these types of people breathe life into our dreams. They encourage and provoke us to go for it, to believe in ourselves and the dreams brewing inside of us.
Remember back for a moment to that conversation. The glint they had in their eyes to encourage you to take the leap of faith. The feeling of excitement when your heart began pounding and asking the question, what if? What if I really believed in this and went for it? What if I could chase after the dream of my heart and see it come to life?
Often people are waiting for someone to believe in them or in the idea they are carrying. Parents, teachers and leaders inspire us on as children to believe in ourselves, but as adults, we sometimes forget to look to others for encouragement to go after our dreams or try something new. We get caught up in our busy lives and forget to dream.
We can also be that for others. When was the last time you went out with a friend and asked them what dreams they are carrying? Where you had a deep conversation digging a little deeper past their current job to see what else may be brewing in their heart?
Make yourself available to friends and colleagues. See what aspirations and ambitions they have besides the day in, day out duties of their current job. Find out what excites them and makes them come alive? What do they enjoy doing the most? What do they love and what makes them fulfilled? You will find as you do, your own heart will come alive too with ideas and thoughts for your own desires.
I remember a conversation at lunch over eight years ago with a dear friend. She simply asked me “what do you want to do with your life?” I remember looking at her and commenting that I’d love to do what she was doing. I wanted to travel, speak and encourage women to go after the dreams of their heart. It wasn’t even on my radar before that afternoon. Yet her encouragement planted a seed of desire in me that I am still working through even now.
Often these simple conversations become a spark that enables a friend to begin dreaming again. It reminds some of why they are in the business they are in. It realigns them to the reason behind the mundane work or creates a desire to find a new position. Much of our life is doing the practical day to day tasks and chores, but when we reconnect to the why, purpose and meaning comes back into what we are doing. Sometimes a great dialogue triggers fresh ideas allowing our hearts to begin dreaming again.
